You can not make a Batman movie and have him fighting criminals with guns, fighting martial artists who can kick through a concrete wall, fighting people who could, in 2 seconds, kill a normal human with one action, while he's running around in pajamas. It's just not feasible. While I understand people being purists, you simply can't make a believable Batman movie without putting him in some sort of armor.
The armor he wears is experimental, light as a feather military armor that Wayne Enterprises is developing for a military contract. It could be Kevlar or something stronger, I'm not exactly sure what it is. Remember in the original film when the thugs shoot Batman and he just keeps getting up and coming after them? You can't do that with spandex.
